There are 1,000 cliches about fear.
If you have ever dipped a toe into the world of personal development, you've likely come across some version of:
"Feel the fear and do it anyway".
You hear a lot of motivational-type people bring this up. It might be disguised in one of a million types of ways but the message is clear:
If you're not DOING something, you're "stuck" behind fear.
Here's what I think is happening (says the Fear Coach, shooting herself in the foot) - I think many self-help types are lumping lots and lots of reasons for not taking action under the umbrella of "FEAR". Things like:
It's critical to know WHY you're not taking the risks and bold actions you say you want to take. If you address the wrong root cause, you will STILL be stuck, and worse, you'll feel even shittier.
It would be like finding out you have an allergy to pollen, and then eliminating sugar from your diet. You're still sneezing and feeling like crap, AND now you're feeling hopeless on top of it.

And even more importantly, not knowing if fear IS the root cause of stalling, procrastinating, or avoiding risks means that you WILL stay stuck behind it.
It MUST be addressed before being able to do bold things to move that coaching practice ahead, or show up like a leader at work, or have a radically honest conversation with your spouse.
So how do you know what's driving the stuck bus?
Before you get sold on the idea that you're stuck because you're afraid, ask yourself:
And if it turns out that you genuinely feel nervous, afraid, sick to your stomach, jittery, or anxious when you think about making that bold move, THEN you can confidently (ironic) say that fear is driving the stuck bus.
What's so important to me is that you don't let anyone else tell you that you're afraid just to guilt you into reading their stuff or working with them or whatever. YOU ARE THE ONLY AUTHORITY HERE!
